1. Local
government
We believe in the empowerment of communities
with decision making at local levels. Thanks
to Labour's actions the council tax has gone
up by less than half the average increase in
other areas of Kent County Council.
2. Local
housing
Our objectives are to deliver new affordable
housing and ensure that housing remains at a
good standard. Maidstone borough council needs
962 units per year to deliver the shortfall
in new affordable homes. There should be greater
freedom for the council to improve housing and
to play a role in new building projects
3. Community
living
Our aim is for people to work together in communities
to achieve more than they can alone. The Maidstone
Mela demonstrating how communities can work
together an initiative of our Labour councillor
Morel D’Souza.
4. Health
issues
We need easier access to Primary care services,
and we support walk-in centres to improve access
to those that cannot see their GP. The continuing
cuts in waiting times have helped our community
move forward. We also would support a ban on
smoking in public places.
5. Green
agenda
We need to drive forward with recycling with
more boxes for collection for different forms
of household rubbish, and support the expansion
of the weekend freighter service. We will expand
the cleaner streets targets that have been a
success.
6. Public transport
From this year the over 60’s will have
a free bus pass for all off peak travel throughout
Kent, a Labour party initiative. We will press
for better public transport connections whether
these be rail, coach or bus.
